Rain is in the forecast! It has been months without rain and your jobsite may need some preparations! Look around your jobsite and determine where will the storm water fall and flow. Where does the storm water discharge from the site? Where are the concentrated and channel storm water flow paths? (along curb gutters, swales and after long stretches of sheet flows). This will help you identify target areas or areas of concern.

#1 Minimize Exposure of Potential Pollutants to Rain Water
Cover exposed stockpiles; secure plastic over stockpiles with tied sand bags and surround stockpile with a sediment control barrier (fiber roll, gravel bags)
Store liquid materials within secondary containment and in a covered area or in an enclosed location.
Remove accumulated sediment from storm water flow paths
Sweep sediment from curb gutters and from surrounding drain inlets
Remove sediment fronting gravel bags, fiber rolls or silt fence sediment controls
Ensure stockpiles are stored away from storm water flow paths
#2 Install appropriate BMPs at storm water discharge locations
Install linear sediment controls (silt fence, fiber roll or gravel bag berms, etc.) at project perimeter where storm water surface flow discharges from the site and downgrade of all disturbed soil areas. Note silt fence and fiber roll must be trenched and staked into ground so gravel bags work best on impervious/hardscape surfaces.
Install check dams in areas of channelized and concentrated storm water flow. Check dams are effective in reducing erosion and surface flow velocity which allows sediment and particles to settle.
Install drain inlet protection at storm drains within the project limits and vicinity.
For grated drains in areas with vehicular traffic utilize filter fabric as DI protection
For curb inlets with no grates use compost sock or gravel bags
For drain inlets in grassed/dirt areas fiber roll can be used
#3 Implement erosion controls; stabilize or temporarily cover disturbed soil areas & exposed slopes
Erosion controls are the most effective in minimizing sediment discharges from project site; sediment controls alone are not effective.
Exposed slopes should be stabilized with hydromulch, hydroseed and/or geotextiles and rolled erosion control products and at a minimum covered with plastic tarps
Stabilize inactive disturbed soil areas
Temporary stabilize significant disturbed soil areas (spray soil binder, add base course, compact soil)
#4 Maintain BMPs
Repair any tears/rips in silt fence and ensure silt fence is properly trenched
Replace torn or flattened fiber roll and ensure fiber roll is properly trenched
Replace worn drain inlet protection as needed.
Maintain stabilized entrance, add more rock if needed.
